What is Reiki?

The word Reiki is a Japanese word that is pronounced Ray-Key, and translates into Universal (Rei) Energy (Ki). Although it came into modern consciousness through a Japanese teacher, Dr. Usui, it is actually a form of energy work that was used centuries ago by Tibetan monks to raise their energy levels during meditations. Energy is known as chi, ki, or prana throughout the world, and we are all energy beings, therefore, raising our energy levels enhances our well-being.

A Reiki Practitioner has received training in the technique of transferring Universal Energy through themselves to others. In order to be able to do this they have received an attunement. An attunement is performed by the Reiki Master Teacher and involves opening the energy channel of the Reiki student. Once this energy channel is opened it allows the energies of the Universe to flow through their bodies and out their hands. Reiki is just one tradition of energy work using this technique. Similar techniques you may have heard of are Therapeutic Touch and Healing Light. All of these involve the transfer of energy in order to raise and balance the energies of the body.

When you receive a Reiki treatment you lie on a massage table, fully clothed, and the Reiki Practitioner will allow the Universal Energy to flow through their aura into yours to raise and balance your energies. The effect is that you will experience a state of deep relaxation that will generally last for quite a while.

The Reiki Practitioner is always very respectful of your energies and personal space. The practitioner never uses their own energy during the session, nor do they take any energy from you. The best explanation I can give you to demonstrate what actually occurs during a Reiki session is to have you visualize two lit candles. Each candle has its own brilliant flame. Now bring the two candles together, allowing the flames to join together into a single flame. The single flame created from the two candles burns much higher and brighter than the individual flames did. When you separate the flames again, they return somewhat to their normal size and intensity. If one of the candles originally had a shorter wick and did not burn as brightly, after the flames come together and then separate, both candles would be burning with increased brilliance. That example is just a simple visual for you to understand how your energy and the Universal Energy from the Reiki Practitioner work together to raise and balance your energies.

How often should you have a Reiki session? You are the best judge of that. If you are feeling out of balance, not feeling well or have a low energy level, then a Reiki session might be just what you need to regain your optimal health and well-being. This form of energy balancing is not only good for adults and children, but the family pets as well. Sessions can be done in-person or long distance over the phone. It is important that you speak with a Reiki Practitioner before you schedule a session to ensure that you feel comfortable with their personal energy. Having a Reiki treatment should always be a calming, and hopefully, blissful experience.
